Artist’s Reflection:

I am not American and as such I was a bit nervous to share this piece but I have been urged by my intuition over and over again to create it, so one day I finally listened.

Up until this point I thought I had no authority to speak on this subject. However growing up in Canada I did personally feel like the US was like our cooler big brother.

I remember my first trip as a child to an incredible little Christmas town called Frankenmuth and then going outlet shopping afterwards. It was a little girl’s indulgent dream.

I remember the excitement before visiting big cities like LA, NY and Miami for the first time and how they each had their own unique cultures and vibes. Craft beers in college towns like Ann Harbour and sweet, juicy peaches the size of my head from farm stands in Vermont are also fav memories.

I have visited incredibly spiritual places like Sedona and the Grand Canyon and felt the incredible energy that emanates from within the US borders.

I even eloped with the love of my life in the deserts of Nevada. Magic!

I’ve skied the incredible slopes of Wyoming, hiked in Colorado, sat lakeside in the Adirondacks, and swam with the Manatees in Clearwater.

I have met incredible friends from the US through business, travel, my art community and now even more so living abroad. I have always understood why many Americans choose not to leave their country and why so many others have dreamed of living there.

A few years back I started having terrible visions of an America violently divided. Where the people of the nation couldn’t see their riches for being blinded by illusion and agenda. They’re terribly sad and frightening scenes and break my heart knowing there are so many I love living there right now.

When I spoke to my husband about the idea for this piece I explained that although I could see this all playing out on the international stage, I didn’t know what right I had to say squat about it.

He very aptly and succinctly pointed out the obvious to me, “Your work is about the illusion of division. About how the filters and programs we associate with cause us to think that we are so different from one another that we can’t possibly fit in or get along with others”.

And then I knew I had to paint this piece.

For years I have felt divided, isolated, scared and angry. I felt like others didn’t get me. It made me want to lash out or hide away. Now I am learning that there is no peace of mind in that.

That some of us must be brave and lead with love, recognizing our unity as humans and children of this Earth (rather than the political, racial, gendered, the list goes on…) labels and boxes “they” try to degrade us to.

So no, I am not American, but seeing this from a 3rd-party perspective I felt this was art and more importantly a message that needed to be shared.

With much love and hope for humanity’s future, Lïlï”
